Espacios:
Espacios is an album dedicated to my dear friend Byron Coba, double bassist of the Ecuadorian Youth Symphony Orchestra and longtime teacher at the Conservatorio Mozarte, who passed away two years ago. His life, musical presence, and artistic legacy are at the heart of this work.
Rooted in the Ecuadorian albazo, a traditional rhythm known for its vibrant, forward-moving pulse, the album blends folkloric elements with jazz harmony and improvisational language. Across its pieces, Espacios transforms remembrance into motion—expressing memory through energy, openness, and celebration rather than stillness.
The interplay between Mauro Martins on drums, Nelson Briceño on percussion, and pianist Javier Leutenegger forms a constantly shifting and responsive foundation throughout the album. Our collective dialogue shapes the music’s harmonic and rhythmic landscape, allowing the ensemble to unfold with spontaneity, depth, and openness.
